Dear Friends,
In times of profound uncertainty, your contributions are making a tremendous impact.
As we gathered with family and friends this holiday season, many of us felt the familiar pull between seeking hope and bearing witness to overwhelming challenges in the world. Since 2020, it seems that each High Holiday season brings a new wave of crisis. We hear about the trauma in Israel, the charged U.S. elections, and climate-related concerns—but barely a word about the unyielding war in Ukraine, where hundreds of missiles rain down on the very communities Action-PSJ supports every day. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, even numb. What can one person, one voice, and one donation possibly do to help?
This is the power of your support. When combined, the donations of individuals like you allow Action-PSJ to provide essential services to elderly Jews in Ukraine. These are people for whom every day brings a new set of challenges but who find hope and empowerment through the help you provide. Let us take a closer look at what your generosity has accomplished:
1. Microgrants for Elders: These grants supplement meager pensions, giving each elder the autonomy to make choices that directly improve their quality of life. From buying food or medicine to paying for heating or small repairs, your support enables elders to meet their basic needs with dignity.
2. Telehealth Program: Partnering with the Jewish Medical Center, this program has grown from a small pilot to a robust initiative, reaching nearly every elder in Action-PSJ’s network, even those displaced. Monthly consultations with medical professionals ensure that these elders receive regular, compassionate care—an invaluable gift when health resources are scarce.
3. Mental and Physical Health Days in Dnipro: This unique pilot program, created by our Ukrainian Director, Ella Gonchonova, brings elders from communities under constant attack into the city of Dnipro for a day of connection and care. They visit the Menorah Center, the largest Jewish building in the world, where many experience a sanctuary and touch a Torah for the first time. They receive in-person medical check-ups and participate in art therapy at Or Shalom, learning tools to manage anxiety. During the first visit, we even caught a case of skin cancer early enough to treat it.
Through these experiences, elders from villages under relentless missile attacks gain strength and a sense of pride. They are empowered not just to survive but to connect with their Jewish heritage in ways they never imagined possible. Many had never left their villages since the war began; traveling to Dnipro meant overcoming fear and stepping out with purpose. They returned home feeling energized and hopeful, a reminder of the profound resilience you help them sustain.
These elderly Jews are living examples of resistance and resilience, standing firm in their homes while proudly engaging in Jewish life in a world where antisemitism is again on the rise. Each donation you give directly supports these vital programs. You fill service gaps and provide dignity to those who need it most.
When we ask ourselves, “What can I do? How can my support make a difference?” the answer is here. Because of you, Action-PSJ can bridge the gaps for these elders in Ukraine, meeting their immediate needs and bringing hope, connection, and community amid ongoing hardship.
Thank you for standing with us in this important work. Please consider renewing your commitment so that, together, we can continue to uplift and support these incredible individuals through the challenges ahead.
