Dear Friends,
Supporting Our Elders Amidst the Crisis in Ukraine.
As the Executive Director of Action-PSJ, I am compelled to address the devastating impact of Russia’s escalating attacks on Ukraine. In recent days, we have witnessed the relentless bombardment of civilian infrastructure, including apartment buildings, schools, and a children’s hospital. Our hearts break as we see the communities we serve caught in the crossfire, particularly the elderly who rely on our support.
Most of the elders we serve live alone. Our coordinators and volunteers provide a vital lifeline, offering care and companionship amidst the anxiety and chaos of war. The stress is unbearable, and our resources are stretched thin. We urgently need your help to continue our mission and provide the necessary support to those who need it most.
Action-PSJ’s network of volunteers on the ground is working tirelessly, making a significant impact by providing support and care. As a modest and nimble organization, we can quickly adapt to the needs of our community, offering personalized support when it is most needed.
Our emergency fund, Action for Ukraine, is open and accepting donations. As the situation on the ground worsens, we must be financially prepared to provide both emergency and long-term support.
Here are the voices of three of our brave coordinators from some of the hardest-hit communities:
Alisa from Mariupol
Alisa remains in constant contact with our elderly, many of whom were displaced from their homes in Mariupol in 2022 and now live in Dnipro and Kyiv. She shares:
“Strong missile attacks of Ukrainian cities are a difficult test for our wards. The Dnieper is under continuous fire, and Kyiv has been badly damaged. These people, who lost their homes and everything they had carefully built over the years, survived the blockade and shelling in 2022. We try to provide them with support and attention. I call and offer assistance and evacuation if necessary, and I am ready to provide emergency aid if there is damage to their housing. They are very brave and hold on with all their might.”
Alena from Novomoskovsk
Alena describes the fear and stress in her community:
“Novomoskovsk has been subjected to missile attacks for two days in a row. Fortunately, our wards’ houses were not damaged, but people are very scared. The constant explosions and power outages add to the nervousness of the elderly, who are already exhausted by war.”
Irina from Pavlograd
Irina recounts a harrowing night:
“It was a restless night in Pavlograd. At about two o’clock in the morning, after the alarm was announced, there were two strong explosions. In the morning, I called all our clients. Everyone is alive, but many are very scared because there are no bomb shelters. I visited single clients at home, bringing them medicines, bread, and water. After the stress, many were unable to leave their houses. Today, almost everyone’s condition has stabilized. They all thank God for saving their lives.”
The above news report from Dnipro includes a picture and words from an elderly woman who was evacuated from her apartment. Her experience is representative of all our elders – the anxiety, the high blood pressure, the need to have just one bag ready with the most important documents.
How You Can Help— a donation to the emergency fund, Action for Ukraine, to continue to provide:
