A few days ago, Smela one of our smallest communities, suffered yet another horrific attack by Russian missiles. This time, the apartment building belonging to one of our beloved elders, Taisya was damaged. Taisya lives alone and is often confined to her bed. Due to an amputation, she relies on a wheelchair to get around. Taisya is one of many elders in our community who cannot reach the safety of a bomb shelter. Fortunately, she is physically unharmed, though profoundly shaken and anxious. The windows of her apartment were all damaged, destroying many of her belongings. I woke up to a WhatsApp message requesting emergency assistance funding to help Taisya, and without hesitation, we immediately agreed to help.
This type of support—given without hesitation, without the burden of paperwork, simply an immediate yes—doesn’t just address Taisya’s material and physical needs; it also alleviates her anxiety and worry. Knowing that the items she needs will be replaced and that she won’t have to navigate through heaps of paperwork or wait for approvals brings her a sense of relief. It instills hope and a feeling of being cared for, lessening the weight of loneliness she may feel.

As Russia intensifies its warfare across villages in Ukraine and indiscriminately targets civilian buildings, our small communities and our isolated and vulnerable elderly still need your help.
