The High Holidays are traditionally a time of reflection and renewal, but this year, for me—and perhaps for many of you—these days feel especially heavy.

In a span of just a few months, the world seems to have shifted beneath our feet. The turning of summer to fall brought intensified missile attacks in Ukraine, the tragic loss of hostages in Israel, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a former camper on one of my Israel trips, and my own personal joy with the marriage of my daughter. Then came the anniversary of the horrific attack on October 7th in Israel, which also happens to be my birthday. The juxtaposition of these moments encapsulates the heart of what we experience every day—an ever-deepening blend of simcha and sorrow, or as we say, “joy” and “oy.”

As I write to you today, I think of our collective need to add more goodness to the world. We cannot reconcile the pain we feel, but we can strive to make a difference where we can. I want to extend an invitation for you to join us in doing just that.

This Yom Kippur, as we contemplate the fragility of life and the power of renewal, I’m asking you to open your heart and hand to Action for Post-Soviet Jewry. With 4,000 people in attendance, the energy in that room was a powerful mixture of everything we had been feeling—pain, love, fear, and hope.

Underlying it all was the heightened awareness of the intense security required just for us to gather safely. The need for such measures is a sobering reminder of the persistent antisemitism and hatred we face, the very things Action-PSJ has been working against since its inception.

Coming together reminded us of the strength in our shared support and how, even in the darkest times, we can build more hope in this world.
