Dear Friends,
As we stand in the Days of Awe between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I find myself reflecting on the deeply intertwined joy and sorrow that define this past year. The High Holidays are traditionally a time of reflection and renewal, but this year, for me—and perhaps for many of you—these days feel especially heavy.
In a span of just a few months, the world seems to have shifted beneath our feet. The turning of summer to fall brought intensified missile attacks in Ukraine, the tragic loss of hostages in Israel, including Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a former camper on one of my Israel trips, and my own personal joy with the marriage of my daughter. Then came the anniversary of the horrific attack on October 7th in Israel, which also happens to be my birthday. The juxtaposition of these moments encapsulates the heart of what we experience every day—an ever-deepening blend of simcha and sorrow, or as we say, “joy” and “oy.”
As I write to you today, I think of our collective need to add more goodness to the world. We cannot reconcile the pain we feel, but we can strive to make a difference where we can. I want to extend an invitation for you to join us in doing just that.
This Yom Kippur, as we contemplate the fragility of life and the power of renewal, I’m asking you to open your heart and hand to Action for Post-Soviet Jewry. Our organization has been a steadfast force in providing aid to the vulnerable, particularly those who feel the immediate effects of war and unrest in Ukraine.
Your donation today will make an extraordinary impact, especially during these uncertain and painful times.
Here’s how your gift can directly impact lives:
- $540 provides a microgrant for one vulnerable pensioner for a year ($45/month).
- $1,080 helps deliver personalized humanitarian aid, including food packages, heat blankets, and hygiene kits, to over 1,000 individuals annually ($90/month).
- $1,800 ensures a day of access and travel to specialized physical and mental health services for up to 144 elders annually ($150/month).
- $3,600 provides telehealth care for 200 elders for one month ($200/month).
(Monthly donations are welcome and can be set up online at www.actionpsj.org)
This week, I had the honor of attending the Combined Jewish Philanthropies Evening of Remembrance and Hope, a commemoration for the victims of the October 7th terrorist attacks. With 4,000 people in attendance, the energy in that room was a powerful mixture of everything we had been feeling—pain, love, fear, and hope.
Underlying it all was the heightened awareness of the intense security required just for us to gather safely. The need for such measures is a sobering reminder of the persistent antisemitism and hatred we face, the very things Action-PSJ has been working against since its inception.
Coming together reminded us of the strength in our shared support and how, even in the darkest times, we can build more hope in this world. It’s the same message we hear from the elders we serve: every humanitarian aid package, every microgrant, every telehealth visit reassures them that they are not alone. They feel cared for, and most importantly, they feel hope. This is the impact of your generosity.
Your generosity this Yom Kippur tips the scales toward goodness and healing.
Thank you for your kindness, your support, and for standing with Action for Post-Soviet Jewry during these challenging times.
Wishing you and your loved ones a meaningful fast, and a year filled with more joy, peace, and healing.
