Dear Friends, August, 27, 2024
I write to you today with a heavy heart, sharing the devastating news from Ukraine. Over the last 48 hours, more than 300 missiles and drones have struck Ukraine, causing widespread destruction and leaving millions in a state of fear and uncertainty. The scale of these attacks is horrifying, and the impact on the lives of everyday Ukrainians is profound.
This morning, I had a long conversation with our Director in Ukraine, Ella, who conveyed the harsh realities of living under constant threat. As we spoke, our call was suddenly cut off due to a blackout—an unsettling reminder of the instability and danger our friends face every day. Ella and our translator, Galina, sounded exhausted, their voices heavy with the fatigue of enduring these relentless attacks and two and a half years of living in a war zone.
I am grateful to report that our elderly community members and coordinators are safe. However, they have not been spared from the terror that these attacks bring. They have heard the loud blasts, felt their apartments and windows shake, and seen the plaster fall from their ceilings. At best, they can take shelter by standing in the doorways, praying for their safety. Leaving their homes is not an option during these moments, intensifying their isolation. With consistent blackouts rolling through day and night, their already challenging circumstances become even more dire.
As we brace ourselves for what is likely to be a long, dark, and cold winter, we are doing everything we can to prepare. However, we need your support more than ever to ensure that we have the financial flexibility to meet the expected and unexpected needs that will undoubtedly arise. Your contributions are vital in helping us provide the necessary aid and comfort to those suffering.
As we prepare for what promises to be a long, dark, and cold winter, we must ensure that we have the financial flexibility to meet the expected and unexpected needs of those we serve. Your continued support is crucial in helping us provide the necessary aid and comfort during these challenging times.
We cannot forget our friends in Ukraine. Now more than ever, we must remember and act. Please read my recent blog in the Times of Israel, link below, discussing the importance of active remembering.
Thank you for standing with us and with the people of Ukraine. Together, we will make a difference.
With gratitude and hope for a more peaceful world,
Executive Director, Action-PSJ
